Choose the service before choosing the space
| Your situation | Start with | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Goods will stay until a later delivery or release | Storage | Expected stay, release schedule and inventory identification |
| Your normal warehouse cannot hold the incoming volume | Overflow capacity | Peak pallet count, arrivals, withdrawals and how volume may change |
| Freight has an identified outbound movement and needs little storage | Cross-docking | Both appointment windows, load split and fallback if pickup slips |
| Freight must move into different transport equipment | Transloading | Incoming and outgoing equipment, loading method and handling requirements |
| Labels or packaging must be corrected before delivery | Rework | Written receiving specifications, materials and completion checks |

You may need more than one service. For example, a shipment awaiting a revised delivery appointment might need storage followed by a transfer to another trailer. Include both steps so the review does not stop at finding floor space.
For related work, include devanning when a container must be unloaded, pallet handling for sorting or load preparation, and fulfillment if individual orders need to be picked and packed. If timing falls outside normal operating hours, flag an after-hours opening request. Each requirement needs its own suitability and availability check.
Build a receiving and release plan
Start with an inventory description that someone outside your operation can use. Provide pallet or piece counts, dimensions, weights and product type. Explain whether pallets can be stacked and identify anything requiring special handling. If you do not know a measurement, flag it rather than treating an estimate as final.
Next, describe the timeline. Give the earliest arrival, expected departure and the range of dates if the project could run longer. A firm release date and an uncertain one are different requirements. Explain who will authorize release and whether the goods leave in one shipment or several.
Finally, choose the location around the actual journey. Include pickup and delivery addresses or ZIP codes, plus an acceptable search area. A city name alone does not explain whether an option works for the next movement. For transfer planning, explore the existing Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth cross-docking pages. A market page is a place to start a request, not a capacity reservation.
Ask for the full cost picture
Ask what the proposed storage and handling scope includes:
- Receiving and unloading, including the counting method.
- The storage unit and billing interval, any minimums and the treatment of partial periods.
- Retrieval and outbound loading, including multiple releases.
- Sorting, palletizing, relabeling or materials, if required.
- Appointment changes, waiting time or work outside agreed hours.
- An extension if the goods cannot leave on the expected date.
These are questions for a quote, not a published XDocks rate schedule. Commercial terms and the operating scope need to be agreed for the particular job. Do not assume a temporary stay removes minimums or other commitments.
Send one complete request
Use this checklist before submitting:
- Where: city, state, inbound origin, next destination and acceptable area.
- When: arrival window, expected release dates and the local time zone.
- What: product description, counts, dimensions, weights and packaging.
- Handling: unloading, stacking limits, sorting, labeling or other requirements.
- Movement: inbound and outbound equipment, carrier information if known and appointment constraints.
- Control: item or lot identification, who can approve release and any required receipt records.
- Uncertainty: missing information, possible extensions and any date that is not yet confirmed.
How the XDocks review works
Send the work, location, volume and timing through the request form. XDocks reviews the requirements and checks facility suitability and available capacity. Details still requiring confirmation should remain visible in the request; submitting the form does not reserve storage or authorize a delivery.
Before dispatch, obtain the agreed facility and arrival instructions, accepted scope, pricing and release arrangements. If the job changes, ask for the changed scope to be confirmed too.
Can I request only a few days of storage?
Describe the actual dates and quantity. The review needs to establish whether a suitable arrangement is available and what minimums or terms apply. A short duration alone does not establish acceptance.
What if my outbound date changes?
Raise that possibility in the initial request and ask how extensions would be handled. Once a change occurs, confirm the new plan rather than assuming the goods can remain indefinitely.
Do I need storage if the next truck arrives the same day?
You may be describing a cross-dock, but include the time between trucks and a contingency if the second appointment moves. The handling and staging requirements matter more than the service label.
Ready to describe the job? Request a warehouse service review. Include the checklist above so XDocks can assess the work and the information still needed. Facility fit and availability must be confirmed for your request.
Send the work, location and timing
